12|23 Forschung & Lehre 959 AKADEMISCHER STELLENMARKT The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. With its six faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines and its internationally outstanding research profile areas, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its academic achievements and high standards of undergraduate and graduate education. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences comprises six departments with about 180 professors and 9,000 students and is one of the largest faculties in the country. Conducting research for a changing society: This is what motivates us at Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we aim at tackling the grand societal challenges of our time and conducting research for the possibilities of a digitized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a resource-efficient economy. Work together with around 7,250 employees in one of Europe’s biggest research centres and help us to shape change! Joint professorial appointment at Forschungszentrum Jülich and University of Cologne DIRECTOR (F/M/X) AT THE INSTITUTE OF ENERGY AND CLIMATE RESEARCH: IEK-8 – TROPOSPHERE AT FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM JÜLICH in line with the Jülich model to work at Jülich and simultaneously be appointed as FULL PROFESSOR IN ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY (W3) (F/M/X) At IEK-8, approximately 100 researchers investigate chemistry-climate interactions on global to regional scales. They perform experimental, theoretical, and modeling studies of atmospheric self-cleaning potential with a focus on the link between gas-phase oxidation processes and the formation and aging of aerosols. Furthermore, research at IEK-8 includes long-term observations of atmospheric composition (variability and trends) and model simulations of the complex chemistry and transport in the lower troposphere and its interaction with the Earth system. IEK-8 aims for an improved understanding of the connections between air quality, climate change, and the atmospheric impact of the Energiewende (energy transition). Main topics of research are • Long-term observation and modeling of tropospheric composition change, including aerosols and clouds • Radical chemistry and atmospheric oxidation processes in the lower troposphere in field and chamber experiments • Processes of gas-to-particle conversion, particle formation and aging in experimental and model studies • Global and regional impacts of atmospheric processes and emission of reactive trace gases on tropospheric composition and climate • Changes in atmospheric chemical composition due to the Energiewende and their impact on air quality IEK-8 is co-responsible for the establishment and scientific operation of the European research infrastructures IAGOS and ACTRIS, collaborates closely with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast and is part of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. IEK-8 is well positioned for interdisciplinary cooperation with energy and bio-geoscience research as well as with scientific technology development at Forschungszentrum Jülich. IEK-8 is a leading contributor to European efforts in making research data and software compliant with the FAIR principles. YOUR PROFILE We are looking for an internationally recognized researcher in the field of atmospheric sciences with outstanding leadership skills. A strong background in tropospheric process understanding as well as experience in combined experimental and modeling work are required. Interdisciplinary collaboration with the universities and research organizations as well as in national / international research projects is expected. The engagement in the research field “Earth and Environment” of the Helmholtz Association is a major task of the institute director. Involvement in international bodies, such as WMO and IPCC, is desirable. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field as well as a proven track record of excellent scientific achievements. Additional research experience, e. g., evidenced through a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or junior professor or in a research position at a university, a research institution, or in industry, is required. Candidates must also show evidence of, or capacity for, excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision, and dedication to student mentoring.
